The Best Books for 8-Year-Olds of 2024

What I love about this reading stage is that children become more interested in longer chapter books. This opens them up to a whole new literary world of exciting adventures and possibilities. But picture books are still important at this age.

Here are 50 books that will change your eight-year-old’s reading game.

If your child enjoys books about time travel, talking animals, magic, and a diverse urban setting, they will love this book. Kids at this age enjoy the continuity of a series, so this is a great starting point in a four-part collection. You’ll be running to buy the next book before you know it!

Personal Experience

My experience with this book has been quite delightful, as I got it for a friend's 8-year-old child. The story features a relatable and smart main character, set in a modern-day environment with imaginative fantasy elements. The illustrations are well-done, and the narrative flows smoothly at times. However, there were a few minor issues with pacing and dramaturgical errors. Despite these, I believe the series has potential and is suitable for kids who enjoy magical creature stories. One interesting aspect was the author's essay on publishing difficulties, which seemed more targeted towards adults and could have been made available online instead.

I recently read this children's book about Jane Goodall and found it engaging and informative, perfect for its target audience. The writing was clear and easy to understand, with plenty of captivating pictures and useful information. However, I must caution parents about Chapter 7, which contains some graphic and potentially upsetting content about chimpanzee behavior. I appreciated learning about Jane and her discoveries, but felt that particular chapter could have been toned down for younger readers.

Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret

A Rite of Passage for Girls

First-Hand Impression

This classic novel, Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret, resonated with me as a young reader and still holds up today. Her friends are shocked when they discover that Margaret is religious. But what they don’t know is that Margaret has a unique relationship with God. She talks to him about everything, including her secret crush!

Reading Milestones for 8-Year-Olds

Although children progress at different rates, there are developmental norms they should achieve each year. Reading and literacy have their own set of milestones. For 8-year-olds, they are (1):

  • Reading independently: This includes longer novels with less illustrative content.
  • Reading out loud: With appropriate expressions and tones.
  • Understanding paragraphs: Eight-year-olds should understand the text’s formatting and punctuation.
  • Referencing: Can decipher what they don’t understand by referencing it to pictures or context.
  • Comprehension: Summarizing what they’ve read and understanding texts as a whole.

An eight-year-old should also recognize the humor in what they read and be developing a wider vocabulary. They should understand that words don’t always sound the way they’re written and have a good grasp of phonics and spelling.
