Where the Sidewalk Ends

Best Poetic Classic

I believe children should be introduced to poetry as early as possible, and this title is a great choice. Shel Silverstein’s books have been popular for decades. The sketched illustrations will surely ring a bell for most parents!

In this book, you’ll find a broad collection of funny and sweet poems. Whether you read them all in one sitting or read one each night, this is a fantastic way to share poetry with your child and encourage their language skills.

I recently purchased this book for my great nephew, hoping he would love it as much as I did when I was a child. The quirky and fun poems by Shel Silverstein have stuck with me throughout the years, and I still remember some by heart. As I read through the poems again, I found they were just as brilliant and humorous as when I first encountered them. These simple yet entertaining poems are perfect for children and can even help those learning English to practice sentence structure in a fun way. Whether you're a child or an adult, this timeless collection of poetry provides endless laughter and enjoyment.

Katie Fry, Private Eye: The Lost Kitten

Future Investigators

I recommend this book for introducing your child to a book series, even if they’re not quite ready for chapter books. Katie Fry is a “level 2” phonics reader series that takes your child on Katie’s adventure as she solves neighborhood crimes.

The first in the series, I chose this title specifically because it’s meant for a typical 7-year-old’s reading level. It’s designed to challenge the reader without being too complex.

I've recently purchased one of these books for my young granddaughter, and she was absolutely thrilled with it. The detective-style story, featuring the lovable character Katie Fry, was both engaging and easy for her to read as a first grader. She particularly enjoyed the diverse and multicultural representation, as well as the challenging "hand-written" notes in the illustrations. The book also introduced new words for her to learn, while the mystery aspect helped develop her critical thinking skills.

Leave Me Alone

For the Introverts

Why this book isn’t a modern classic yet is beyond me! It’s one of my favorite children’s books — it follows an old woman who wants to be left alone to finish her knitting. This funny and beautifully-illustrated book will strike a chord with introverted children and parents alike as the old lady goes on a quest to find a quiet spot.

This story is excellent for reading aloud to your child, but the language is easy enough for most seven-year-olds to read right back to you.

I found the humor and beautiful illustrations to be incredibly engaging for both introverted children and parents alike. As the old lady embarks on her quest for a tranquil spot, this book became a joy to read aloud to my child. The language is also simple enough for most seven-year-olds to read back to their parents.

The Never Girls Collection #1

Collection for Girls

This is an optimal series to add to your child’s bookshelf if they’re becoming more confident in their reading comprehension. Taking place in Neverland, there’s fantasy waiting, along with the much-loved Tinkerbell.

I adore this book series because it takes readers on a magical adventure and keeps them hooked with an interesting storyline. And if they love the first story, you’re in luck because this collection includes four books!

The visually appealing layout, simple text, and engaging content make it perfect for children, especially elementary-aged boys. My son particularly enjoys the Just Joking Series, finding the jokes to be funny and clean. Dog Man

My First Comic

The Dog Man series is a popular choice among many second graders. This series is written by the same author of Captain Underpants, who uses his witty humor to capture the reader.

This story is formatted as a comic strip, potentially introducing your child to a new writing style. Comics have come a long way since the old-school lowbrow style, so hold your judgment before thinking it’s not worth it.

This book caught my grandson's attention, which is quite a feat considering there aren't many books that can keep boys interested. He's in 2nd grade and not a confident reader, but the sight words in this book made him feel more confident. My 7-year-old nephew also loved this book, especially since he wants to be a chef like his dad. The storyline is appropriate for his age level and the moral of never giving up is a great lesson for young readers. However, some customers have mentioned receiving copies with printing issues, such as smeared ink or damaged pages. Despite that, the cute story and wonderful illustrations make this book a hit for second graders.

The Night Fairy

Magical Illustrations

In this thrilling story, a bat accidentally chews off Flory’s — a night fairy — beautiful wings. Set against the backdrop of gorgeous illustrations, readers can follow Flory as she practices her sting spell, rides a hummingbird, and negotiates with animals in the hopes of transforming into a day fairy instead.

Readers praise this one as being beautifully illustrated, whimsical, and well-paced. But there is a collective warning that it might be a little spooky for younger readers, but I think it’s well-suited to ages seven and up.

Moonshot: The Flight of Apollo 11

Learn About Space Adventures

Is your little one interested in all things space? This detailed and educational story takes readers along on the journey of Apollo 11. In 1969, Apollo 11 took a group of men into space, where Neil Armstrong became the first person to walk on the moon.

I love this story because it is an exciting true story but leaves no detail behind. It maps out what it’s like to be on a space mission, where the astronauts sleep, what they eat, and what the moon looks like up close.

Community Review

Love this book for its adorable plot and engaging illustrations, perfect for young readers in pre-kindergarten to 1st grade. My daughter, who's in 1st grade, enjoyed the story so much that we read it over and over again, and she even used it for one of her book reports. However, I find myself on the fence about the overall theme as it deals with a bully, and the resolution didn't sit quite right with me. My bilingual student also loved this book and appreciated the strong character of Lulu. It's a great Halloween read, and it seems to prepare junior readers for longer chapter books as it is a bit on the longer side. My 8-year-old, who struggles with reading, really enjoys this book and can read it rather well now.

For Dragon Lovers

First in the series, this easy-to-read chapter book follows an eight-year-old boy named Drake, who is taken away to be trained as a Dragon Master. Alongside other masters-in-training, can they train their dragons and discover their secret powers?

It reminds kids that it’s okay to say no to physical touches, including high-fives and hugs. I appreciate that it also instructs kids on what to do if someone is inappropriate. I love this sweet story for bedtime, especially if your child is scared of nighttime creatures. They’ll be filled with confidence that their teddy won’t let anything bad happen to them.

Colorful and Hilarious

In this hilarious book (which I recommend reading with a different voice for each color), a box of crayons quit their job. They feel unappreciated or underused by Duncan, so they each write a letter, giving him their notice of resignation!

This is a fantastic book for toddlers and older kids, making it a classic for your home bookshelf. It’s absolutely hilarious and will surely have the whole family laughing.

This book has left a lasting impact on my teenage son, who still cherishes it as one of the few books he's saved from his childhood.

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

For Reading To Your Child

While the reading level for this one is ages nine and up, I think it’s fantastic to read aloud to your child. Children can comprehend more via listening than they can through reading. So it’s worth choosing a few challenging books, such as this, to read to them.

This is great for settling to sleep at night or spending a rainy afternoon indoors. If you don’t know, this book is about a magical land called Narnia which is hidden behind a wardrobe door. The place is stuck in an eternal winter — can a group of siblings free Narnia from the witch’s spell?

This book has been a delightful read for multiple generations in my family, from my son to my 11-year-old grandson. Sharing this book with my family has created many cherished memories and brought us countless belly laughs during bedtime readings.

I’m bookending the list with another Shel Silverstein book because he truly is one of the best children’s poets. It’s another collection that features gorgeous poetry and simplistic drawings.

You’ll find funny poems about an attic light, hammocks, and a babysitter who takes her job too literally. Why not add this to your child’s collection and read a few each night before bed?

What Is a Seven-Year-Olds Reading Level?

By the time your child turns seven, they should be able to put simple sentences together. Some might have moved on to more complicated words.

Since they’ve been introduced to context clues, children will start to be able to differentiate between homonyms by observing surrounding text. This will help them better understand puns and jokes, so they’ll also start developing a more vivid sense of humor (1).

Between the ages of six and eight, many children develop a passion for reading. However, research has shown that children with poor reading skills at the end of first grade tend to remain poor readers unless early intervention occurs (2).

Keep an eye on your child’s reading progress and raise concerns with their primary health physician or educators when necessary. Schools typically have a reading specialist on standby who can help with reading difficulties.

Reading aloud with your child is a beneficial way to keep this from happening. This can be more difficult at this age since some children won’t be as eager, but squeezing in those special moments together will make a huge difference.

How To Choose Books for 7-Year-Olds

Before purchasing a bunch of books, keep these things in mind to ensure you’re choosing the best stories for your child.

Humorous Storylines

Most seven-year-olds think they’re hilarious — and most of the time, they are! Finding a book with a silly storyline, or even kids’ joke books, will grab your little comedian’s interest. Not only will they giggle their way through these books, but they’ll be practicing reading and comprehension skills without realizing it.

Age-Appropriate

Now that your child is getting older, they may start outgrowing some of their previous favorites. It may be time to retire some of their kindergarten classics and bring in more age-appropriate titles.

This will help challenge your child to enhance their reading skills while keeping the books at their reading level to avoid frustration.

Variety

Because your reader can now understand reading basics, this is a good time to introduce them to various writing styles. Fiction, non-fiction, and poetry are three main styles that I recommend exposing your child to.
