The Pout-Pout Fish

For the Pouty Pants

Mr. Fish is not a happy guy. He swims about, spreading his dreary mood to all the other fish until they’ve had enough. He doesn’t think he can do anything about it, but will someone change his mind?

This one made my list for its use of silly rhyme to make the reader laugh. The fun illustrations of all the ocean characters are also nice for capturing your child’s attention. Mr. Fish is a tried and true hit for bedtime as well.

How To Catch a Mermaid

A Mermaid Tale

There's a Monster in Your Book

Silly and Interactive

This silly interactive story is fantastic for engaging with your child before bed, especially if they’re fearful of monsters. This story prompts your child to shake the book, blow on it, tilt the book, and do more fun activities.

Together, you can try to get the monster out of the book while showing your child that monsters aren’t scary. In fact, they’re friendly, fun, and best of all, they don’t hide in your room but in books!

Individual Opinion

After purchasing this book for my young children, I found it to be a delightful and interactive read that had them giggling throughout the story. However, I noticed that it might not be suitable for all children, as my three-year-old became a bit frightened of the monster at first. As a speech therapist, I appreciate how this book can also be used to target following directions and engage kids who might be otherwise hard to involve in reading activities. Despite receiving a couple of twisted copies, this book remains a favorite among my children and even my kindergarten students.

We Found a Hat

Sly & Dry Humor

My child has loved Jon Klassen’s books since before he turned one. The drawings are simple and cute, and the story is perfect for silly voices and expressions. In this story, two turtles find a hat they both want to wear.

Your little one will laugh at the mischievous attitude of the turtles, who both are desperate to wear the hat. Each time you read this one, you can use different voices and encourage your child to join in with some of the easier words.

Tips for Reading With Preschoolers

When kids are young, they’re in their prime for developing cognitive abilities through reading. Despite this, the American Academy of Pediatrics says that one in three American children start school without the beginner literary skills needed for learning to read.

If you want your child to have a head start on literacy before they enter kindergarten, encouraging a passion for reading is vital. Here are my top tips for igniting that spark:

  • Read anything and everything: If your child loves a particular book, even if it doesn’t fall into typical four-year-old reading material, stick with it (as long as it’s appropriate). All reading is good reading.
  • Read together often: Work family reading time into your daily schedule. This is a great bonding activity, as well as an educational one.
  • Check a book beforehand: On that note, I recommend parents read a book before you read it to your child. Even though most published books targeting preschoolers are age-appropriate, your morals and views might not always align.
  • Don’t make it a chore: Your little one might not care about the linear narrative of a book, so don’t worry about reading the pages in order or even making it to the end. Let your child lead the way.
  • Use fun voices: Your little one will still love funny voices and accents at this age, so work it into each reading session.
  • Ask questions: Engage your child with the story by asking them questions like, “What was your favorite part?” or “Can you guess what will happen next?”

How To Choose Books for 4-Year-Olds

There are several things to remember when you’re on the hunt for books. Two priorities include subject matter and illustrations, but you should always remember it’s important to let your child choose books, too.

Subject Matter

Stick to what your child is interested in. If your four-year-old loves robots and outer space, finding a book about one of them will blow their mind. But if you get them something they aren’t a fan of, it could turn them away from reading.

Bright and Silly Illustrations

Kids this age live for vibrancy and silliness. Finding a children’s book with lots of bright pictures and fun illustrations will capture their attention during storytime.

This will also help develop their imagination and introduce them to context clues, which they’ll learn more about in elementary school.

How To Engage Your Child in Reading

Struggling to make storytime engaging for your child? I’m here to help make it more enjoyable for both of you.

1. Read the Title and Attributions

Before opening the story, read the title and the author’s name while simultaneously pointing at the words. Your child may not be able to read yet, but pointing to these will show them that the title and who created the book are important.

2. Ask Questions

Throughout the story, it’s beneficial to pause every now and again to ask questions about the things they see and so on.

If you’re reading a story about a sad hippo, you can ask your child how they think the hippo feels and why the hippo may feel that way. This will aid in comprehension and help your child search for deeper meanings.

3. Read the Book Beforehand

Before reading any books with my child, I always like to read or skim through them first. Doing this makes it easier to read with the thoughts and feelings of the storybook characters in mind.

This will also allow you to decide how to explain new vocabulary words or other questions that may arise from reading the book.
