Absolutely Hilarious

Parents and kids praise this book for its hilarious humor! It’s a favorite with kids from the ages of three all the way into their teenage years! In this book, a box of crayons quit their job as crayons because they feel unappreciated or underused by their owner, Duncan.

Parents can read each letter using a different voice which will surely make toddlers laugh! This engaging book uses top-tier humor to tell the story of protesting crayons and a creative young boy.

Community Review

This delightful book quickly became the hit among my visiting nieces, with an age range of three to five. The unique point of view aspect, exploring the feelings and personal views of crayons, makes it a fresh and imaginative read that kids can relate to. I fondly remember my teenage son loving this book growing up, and it's perfect for parents to read aloud to their 6 or 7-year-olds. Although the humor might need to be simplified for toddlers, my 20-month-old niece still enjoys it and asks for it to be read repeatedly. This fun and funny book is something I believe any parent or guardian would enjoy sharing with their child, as it truly captures the essence of what crayons might say if they could leave a note. Even with minor issues like the pink crayon page being stuck together, the overall charm and creativity of the story make it a captivating read for children.

A Stone Sat Still

Calming and Quiet

This beautifully-illustrated story about a still stone captures what it means for time to pass. The stone remains where it is in the world as others crawl over it, as the sun sets over it, and how it is home to many creatures. But it also has a deeper meaning about how the world changes and memories remain.

With its lovely rhymes, this calming and soothing book is a great one to read during quiet time or before bed. I love that it ends with an open question for little readers to answer.

Got this children's book as part of the Oi series, and my son absolutely adores them. The illustrations are fantastic, but some of the rhymes and word choices don't work as well in American English. For instance, knowing that "mog" is slang for "cat" is essential to understanding the story. Additionally, some of the grammar is questionable, which could be confusing for young readers. Despite these drawbacks, it's still an enjoyable book, though it might be more suitable for children familiar with British English.

How Full Is Your Bucket?

This is one of my favorite children’s books! It’s a fantastic story about why kindness matters. Felix learns all about invisible buckets, which are full when you’re happy or empty when you’re sad.

Felix discovers that when his bucket is empty, he has mean thoughts. But when someone is nice to him, his bucket fills back up, and he has kinder thoughts. Bringing home a new sibling is a challenge, and your three-year-old might grow through a range of unpleasant emotions, just like Bunny does in this book. When her parents adopt Wolfie, Bunny is worried that the wolf will eat them. But she soon realizes that just because something might look a little scary doesn’t mean it is.

A 3-Year-Old’s Reading Level

At age 3, children are referred to as preschoolers. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines a preschooler as a child who isn’t old enough for school or one who is attending preschool.

It’s too early to expect most 3-year-olds to flip open a book and read the words. It may take several more years for this to happen.

By age 3, however, many children will (1):

  • Understand that print conveys a message.
  • Identify familiar signs.
  • Participate in rhyming games.
  • Recognize and identify letters and even make some letter-sound matches.
  • Enjoy listening to storybooks.
  • Attempt to retell their favorite stories.
  • Endeavor to read on their own and write as well.

At this age, children may also be able to grasp longer storylines. Keep reading to your child; it’s well worth the effort.

How To Choose Books for 3-Year-Olds

Here are my top tips to keep in mind when shopping for books for your 3-year-old:

  • What does your child like? By now, you can make a good guess of your child’s interests. Buy books that revolve around their favorite things.
  • Picture books: These will help your child continually identify and relate pictures to actions or names.
  • Fantasy or fairy tale books: This enhances your child’s imagination and creativity.
  • Rhymes: Silly stories or humorous poems may encourage your child to enjoy reading.
