I'm a parent to a 21-month-old and recently picked up this interactive bedtime book. The illustrations are cute and engaging, and my daughter loves the lift-the-flap feature. It's also educational, as it teaches body parts and counting from 1-10. However, it can be challenging to hold my child and give kisses like the book suggests simultaneously, so we usually read it on the floor. Additionally, some pages are a bit wordy for a toddler's attention span, so I modify the kisses to keep her engaged.

This touch-and-feel book has been a hit with babies and young children, including my six-month-old niece, who enjoyed exploring the different textures. As a former preschool teacher, I appreciate the use of real, beautiful photos instead of cartoon drawings, as it helps children connect with the animals. The sensory pieces in this book are great, though some pages could have more texture or fabric variety. I noticed that the binding's threads are coming loose, which raises concerns about its durability. Despite this, the book remains a fun and engaging way for little ones to learn about animals.

Bought this book for my little one, and it quickly became a favorite in our household. The flaps and colorful illustrations keep my child engaged, though the flaps could be a bit sturdier for tiny hands. Despite some odd animal sounds mentioned in the book, it's a fun and entertaining read that I'd recommend for young kids.

Look, Look!

Exploration Time!

This book starts by highlighting that hands reach, flowers bloom, fish swim, and the stars shine. These are just some of the fascinating things that your child loves to witness.

The black-and-white contrast in the book is simply amazing. It uses full-page illustrations and short red text to help your baby comprehend how different things work.

Furthermore, it has been effective in calming fussy babies, making it a valuable addition to any parent's collection.

From the moment we started reading these tactile books, my daughter has been captivated by the engaging textures and vibrant illustrations. As we've collected multiple books from the series, it's clear that these books are educational and fun for both children and adults. I've recently purchased this Dr. Seuss book for my young child, and it has quickly become a favorite in our household. The simplicity of the rhyming words and engaging illustrations keeps my child focused while also teaching them new vocabulary. As the story progresses, my child has been able to build on previously learned words by changing out individual letters, which reinforces the importance of letter placement in reading. This book has not only boosted my child's confidence in their reading abilities, but also fostered a genuine love for reading. Overall, this classic Dr. Seuss book is an excellent choice for any new or emerging reader.

Great book for young kids, especially those who adore dogs! My preschooler quickly became obsessed with this book, loving the various sounds the dogs make and the counting aspect of it. This book stands out from others in this age group, as it counts up to ten instead of just five. We have several Sandra Boynton books, but this one is definitely a favorite in our household. Although my little one can be quite destructive with books, we had to repurchase this one, as it's just too good to let go.

Best book for young kids with its large, colorful pages and hilarious big animal mouths that truly capture their attention. My little one has been enjoying this book since they were three months old and still can't get enough of it! The flaps add to the fun and excitement, but I must admit they're a bit thin and can tear off easily if your child is rough with them. This book not only reinforces animal sounds but also teaches rhyming words, providing an educational aspect as well. It's the perfect length for toddlers and has become a favorite in our household, making it a great gift for others too.

Great, inspiring biography about Frida Kahlo overcoming physical obstacles to create art. The simple drawings are an interesting choice for her story, and my child found her to be "the artist that never stopped." This book is suitable for children, as they can relate to minor injuries and appreciate Frida's strength and empathy. My creative six-year-old loved this book, and it's a wonderful way for young children to learn about powerful women. My experience with this beautifully illustrated book was overall positive, but there is one part that made my two-year-old grandson quite upset. Why You Should Read to Your 1-Year-Old

Reading to your baby helps them build their vocabulary, improving their communication skills. Reading also stimulates their imagination and aids brain development.

Reading provides babies and kids with information about the world around them. As a result, they’ll start recognizing the colors, shapes, letters, and numbers they encounter (2).

Perhaps most importantly, reading builds a healthy bond and secure attachment between baby and their caregiver. It’s important to read to your baby as often as possible, ideally every day.

What To Consider When Buying Books for a 1-Year-Old

Are you ready to buy some books for your baby? Here are some helpful tips on how to choose a book (3).

  • Sturdy: Select board books or cloth books that are thick and sturdy to endure frequent handling, tossing, and chewing.
  • Large illustrations and colors: Babies find these more eye-catching.
  • Characters: Select books with pictures of babies, animals, or favorite characters (4).
  • Simple and repetitive: Opt for easy-to-remember rhymes.
  • Interactive: Consider books that encourage your baby to participate, such as those with flaps or buttons.

What Is a 1-Year-Old’s Reading Level?

At this age, your baby will rely on you to do all the reading, of course. Having fun while reading is more important than being able to pronounce words, letters, or numbers.

Instead, encourage your child to point at the pictures, lift flaps, and babble back to you. These activities will promote their social development and thinking skills (5).

Here are some more reading tips:

  • Read often: Reading before bedtime is preferable, but also find time during the day to do so. It might help to keep reading sessions short so your child doesn’t lose interest.
  • Be affectionate: Cuddling your baby while reading fosters security for your child and strengthens the bond between you.
  • Ask yourself questions: Pause and ask a question in the middle of reading, and answer it. In doing so, you’ll start stimulating their thought process.
  • Find favorite books: It’s okay to repeat the same story over and over. Young children learn from repetition. If your little one has found a favorite story, it’s okay to read it for the 10th time that week!
  • Get silly: Use facial expressions, vary your voice, make funny animal sounds, and sing. This will help your baby associate reading with fun.

Set a good example by reading on your own. Children learn a lot through observation, and if mommy can read, baby can read as well.
